Improve Your Vocabulary By Knowing These Latin Prefixes

English contains many words adopted from other languages. In fact, experts estimate 80% of English words originated elsewhere. The biggest influence on English vocabulary is Latin. An examination of the 20,000 most used words reveals 5,000 words contain prefixes and over 80% of these use one of only fourteen of the many different prefixes available. By learning these important prefixes, you can improve your mastery of the English language. You will be able to discern at least a partial meaning of words you encounter for the first time by understanding the basic meaning of its prefix.

Listed below are the most used prefixes, their meanings, and example words. To get the most out of seeing these prefixes, copy them into a notebook. Write down the prefix, its definition, and several examples of its use. You can add examples by looking for more in your dictionary. Practice using the words in your writing and speaking. Look for words with these prefixes in newspaper, magazine, or books and underline them. The more you engage the word in some way (writing, speaking, or underlining), the better you will remember it.

Ab- (away from) abhor, abject, abnormal, absolve

Ad- (to, toward) adapt, adept, adhere, adhesion

Be- (on all sides, overly) bedeck, beset, besmear, besprinkle

Com-, con-, co- (with, together) comfort, commence, compel, complain

De- (reversal, undoing, downward) deceit, decipher, default, deliver

Dis- dif- (not, reversal) differ, difficulty, disable, dishonor

Em-, en- (in, into, to cover or contain) embrace, embroider, engage, engrave

Ex- (out of, former) exalt, examine, example, excerpt

In- (into, not) incline, inconsistent, indecisive, induce

Pre- (before) prejudice, prepare, prescribe, preserve, pretend

Pro- (in favor of, before) proclaim, procure, produce, profound

Re- (again, restore) renew, resolve, reveal, revert

Sub- (under, beneath) subcontract, subculture, subject, subordinate

Un- (do the opposite of) unravel, unroll, unseat, unskilled

Although Latin is considered a "dead" language by many, it lives on in the English vocabulary. Not only do many existing words originate from Latin, many new words are constructed from Latin prefixes, suffixes, and roots. New words to describe or name scientific processes or discoveries are often formed from Latin. Think of words like computer, internet, and digital radio. For digital television, you need to be familiar with both Latin and Greek, the other big contributor to the English language.

You can learn more about Greek contributions to the English vocabulary in my next article titled "It was Greek to Me: Improving Your English by Knowing Greek Roots".

EMG Guitar Pickups

EMG, Inc first started manufacturing guitar pickups back in 1976, known as EMG pickups. Over the years they have earned the reputation for quality, clear sounding pickups used by many professional artists. ESP guitars and Jackson guitars currently use EMG pickups as their standard pickup design. Their high output is preferred by hard rock and heavy metal guitarists because of the pickups higher gain output as opposed to most lower output pickups. Some of the bands and artists who currently endorse EMG pickups are Tom Morrello, Zakk Wylde, Stephen Carpenter, Metallica, Slayer and many others

The most common EMG pickups are the EMG 81 and 85. The EMG 81 is usually considered to be the lead pickup and is more commonly used in the bridge position, while the EMG 85 is mainly used as a rhythm pickup more used in the neck position.

Personally I have had great success with using EMG pickups in a Gibson Les Paul and 7 string ESP guitar especially if you are into heavier sounding music. The clarity, deeper tone, and added gain are what make the pickups more suitable. One negative thing about the EMG active pickups is the need for a 9 volt battery, but it's not much of a problem because the battery lasts for a long time. You just need to make sure you replace the battery at least every 6 months because of tone loss over time.

Installation for a set of EMG pickups is fairly easy depending on the type of guitar you have. With the right tools I was able to install a set of Zakk Wylde custom EMGs in Gibson Les Paul in under an hour. As long as you follow the right installation diagrams for your type of guitar you should not run into any problems. The Weekend

Oh what a weekend; exasperating days, nights of debauched behaviour and drunken antics!
What it is to live by the seaside! As the visitors arrive looking for fun; they implode with excitement and go ever so, slightly mad!

As they escape from far-away, congested cities to the serene lands of tranquil countryside and beautiful golden beaches. Do they revel in these exquisite surroundings? No, their ebullience is reserved for the frequenting of bars and getting decidedly smashed!

They came, they consumed and became inebriated; they were narrow minded and very, very loud. The insecure, exhibitionist of questionable intelligence claimed to be of an 'international (of the club scene) pop singer' status; he was not able to go out much, due to the weekly social club appearances. So a weekend at the seaside turned into a very depraved affair. Unfortunately for us they were staying next door.

We heard all about his iconic eminence in club land, his popularity; his expertise; we chuckled at his constant need for reassurance, "I'm good aren't I?"; "I'm the best aren't I?" We heard all about his gym, his personal trainer 'Dan' and his belligerent pursuit to a fitter, better body; we heard all about how he has forsaken his beloved pint for vodka and Red Bull, because Dan had advised him that it has less calories!
We heard a lot!

We ventured into town for the pre-requisite pub crawl, they were indeed ready for action; loud and adulterated; they vied for attention; they mocked; they resounded; unabashed they were obstreperous and crude.
The 'international pop star' did not care for the locals (too scruffy!) or the band of musicians in our parochial pub; he criticised the singer's voice, the sound, the music. As he vociferates to all of his disdain for bands. "Too much noise!"

So we were forced to encroach on the tacky bright lights of the tourist's Mecca. To a sweaty, smoky milieu of thumping dance music and cheesy party tunes that filtrates the ears but not the soul. Sticky floors of spilt cheap lager cling to our feet and imprison in us in this empty, shallow place of drunken stag / hen parties, excited teenagers and the decamped weekenders.
Where gaggles of girls giggle and dance; evoking moods of silliness they wear costumes to attract, like peacocks their strut, displaying their tails. Intoxicated males stumble in clusters; clutching with addled impetuosity at any passing females; any piece of meat! A blow up doll surfs the crowd; floating gracefully like a feather above the herds of marauding stags. As they wrestle and jostle in their boozy camaraderie.

As we watch from the sidelines the 'international pop star' elicits his moves on the dance floor; thrusting his body to the music, drawing on his stage routine, sliding on his knee's ; provoking attention, high on adulation he basks in his glory.
Oh, how they were drunk on merriment and excessive alcohol; oh, how they laughed, danced, poked fun and rambled aimlessly.

When the night was called and we stumbled home in the wee hours laughing gleefully; with not a care in the world.
But how the mood can change so abruptly! When the liquor, drenched atmosphere can incense and inflame.
In the middle of the night; in the early hours of the morn, contentions ignited and an argument did rage; screaming, shouting, swearing, banging, for the whole neighbourhood to hear. We cringed in our beds, we struggled to sleep; we longed for the weekend to be over and the visitors to leave!

As quickly as they arrived, they departed, leaving a trail of carnage and bitterness in our hearts. Why travel so far to insensate the mind? Why dissipate the body in tacky bars and overpriced clubs? Call that a holiday, when they do the same at home? To live by the seaside, the party town; with it's summer haze of drunken revelry and boisterous larks. How we pine for the winter and a glorious, desolate town!

Dance Floor Tips: The Art of Dance Floor Socializing

Anyone who has ever been to a social dancing event knows that not everyone has a good time, or at least not equally so. Some sit out many (if not all) dances, while others never seem to sit down. Why the difference?

There is only one reason for dancing at a social do: to have fun. There is no competition, no need to be absolutely perfect in the steps, and no reason to be stern and serious while cutting a rug. The key skill is the ability to socialize while keeping feet in time to the music.

This is easier said than done for some people, and is what makes the difference between sitting on the sidelines and hitting the floor. Many people are very self-conscious about dancing, either because they dont know the steps or because they think they look silly. Others are so intense while doing the steps that they can barely look up, and even when they do, conversation is impossible because they are silently counting and concentrating on foot movement.

Beyond the basics of dance etiquette, there are some rules of thumb that warrant following to master the art of dance floor socializing. Here are some examples:

Prepare yourself. If you know that there is a big event coming up that will include dancing beyond the non-contact freestyle sort, learn the steps. Take a social dancing class or two to master the basics. And practice. When the event comes along, you will be able to take to the floor without worrying about your skill and having to count in your head.

Dress to dance. Think about the dancing part of the event when you plan your outfit. Shoes need allow you to move safely, clothes need to make it easy for a partner to make contact as you move through various steps and turns.

If you want to be asked to dance, put on your happy face. Looking stern will make you appear unapproachable. Tap your fingers or toes to the music, smile, and make eye contact.

On the other side of the coin, try not to refuse an invitation to dance. Most songs are no more than three or four minutes long, so dancing with someone that might not be your ideal partner should not be too much strain. Be gracious, be polite, and you will be rewarded!

Dont dance with just one person. Dancing with a wide set of partners is a cornerstone of social dancing. Dance with everyone, and get everyone to dance.

When you make it out onto the dance floor, keep the fun going. Again, some rules of thumb:

Be entertaining. While having a good time yourself, engage your partner. Think of dancing in terms of moving to music while carrying on cocktail party conversation. Dance at a level you both enjoy, and exercise a good sense of humor. And smile!

Make your partner feel appreciated. The most popular dancers are not the most skillful, but the ones who clearly appreciate and enjoy their partners. Most people are not interested in dancing with someone who is obviously bored or feeling put upon, no matter how great their footwork may be.

Never blame your partner for anything that may happen on the dance floor.

Do not start teaching on the dance floor, unless your partner asks you to do so. Unsolicited lessons are more likely to embarrass your partner than to make them happy. If you are a more skilled dancer, you should be able to match yourself to your partners level of ability.

If you are leading, do so comfortably. Cranking your partners arm to force a turn or pushing and pulling them into position will not be a pleasant experience. If your partner is not doing what you want, your lead probably was not clear enough or beyond her own skill level. Tone it down and lead steps that can be transmitted and received enjoyably.

If you are following, dont start back-leading. It is disrespectful to your partner when you steal the lead.

Protect your partner. If you are leading, anticipate the movement of the other dancers and move your steps into empty areas of the floor so that you dont run into other couples. If you are following, keep an eye out behind your partners back. If a couple is bearing down in his blind spot, let him know with pressure on his hand or shoulder, or simply by telling him.

Avoid humming or singing along with the music you are dancing to.

Social dancing is social. Each dance is a brief encounter that should be fun for both partners. Approach the floor with a good attitude and sense of humor, concentrate on the enjoyment of dancing rather than technical proficiency, and dont worry if there are missteps or other mistakes. Youll go home well exercised and happy!

Top Ten Things To Do At A Rock Show

My sister and I have been going to local rock shows on a regular basis (usually at least one per weekend) for a little over two years now, and between waiting for the bands to set up, sound checks, and the random nothing in between acts, there can be a lot of downtime. We realized that there are quite a number of fun/funny things to do while were waiting, so we thought wed make a list of them ala top ten style.

Top 10 things to do at a show

10. Find the creepy drunk people for safety/entertainment purposes.

Every bar has them - the drunks who cant quite control themselves. They either end up making out with everyone, or picking fights with everyone. Its best to find them early in the night and keep an eye on them.

9. Take pictures of everyone

Take pictures of your friends, band members, random strangers. Its a great way to meet people!

8. Check out the band's merch

Very important. Many bands travel long distances to play and they depend on merch sales to pay for gas. Its a great way to get to know band members who tend to hang out at their merch stands, and sometimes you can get some free stuff, too.

7. Drink

Hey, thats what bars are for, right? While youre at it, buy drinks for the people sitting around you. Youll get some instant best friends that way!

6. Decide what to get at Sheetz on the ride home

Sheetz is a gas station in our area that serves food. You can substitute any place that sells food.

5. Try to guess how many people are taller than you.

You can substitute the word taller here with just about anything. (We use taller since were vertically-challenged.)

4. Stand at the bar until someone buys you a drink

This one works for us on occasion , usually when we cant seem to get the bartenders attention. If we stand there long enough, someone will get the bartenders attention and order our drinks for us.

3. Make friends with the bouncer (it will help you later when he's kicking everyone else out)

Plus, the bouncer can get pretty lonely sitting by the door by himself. They can get a bad rep, but theyre usually pretty nice.

2. Watch the band

During their set or in between sets, bands can be pretty entertaining to watch. Many band members have that personality type where theyre always trying to entertain everyone around them, and they love to be the center of attention, so you might as well give them the attention they crave.

1. Write top ten lists.

Self-explanatory. One we wrote recently - Top Ten Reasons Rock Shows are Better Than Strip Clubs.

Getting The Most Out Of Your Salsa Lessons

This may sound simple but you simply must take lessons and if possible take two or even three a week if you can; especially at the start.

Why do we recommend you take so many lessons each week? Salsa music is complicated, may beats interwoven, and it takes time to tune your ears and feet to the rhythms.

By taking so many lessons at the beginning it reinforces what you are learning and will pay big dividends later on in the learning process.

When starting to learn Salsa its better to join a group lesson; private lessons are great for working on specific parts of your dancing but you will not get them most out of them until you have the basics down.

When joining a group lesson pick one for your level; its better to under estimate your ability than over estimate it.

There is nothing more off putting then arriving at your first lesson and find yourself out of your depth; surrounded by come dancing contestants!

Some tips on choosing the right group to learn with.

1) A class that runs for 6 to 10 weeks at least once a week.
2) The lessons are progressive; this is where you build up each week on the moves learned.

In your firs couple of months you should look too:

2 progressive classes each week

1 night out practice session at a club or event

1 private lesson after approx 5 weeks or more not essential but great to work on specifics.

Your First Lesson

Well done you have made it to your first class. May be you have come on your own or brought a dance partner. One thing we can guaranty is that you are feeling nervous.

You are worried that you have no rhythm, that you have two left feet which are on backwards. Most of all you are worried about falling flat on your face not able to dance Salsa.

As this is a beginners class look around you will see every one is looking and feeling exactly the same. You are not alone.

Remember its about having fun Its not a competition.

Here are some basic rules about lessons you should stick to what ever your level.

1. Find a teacher that suits you, its not one size fits all. There are many Salsa teachers and many ways to teach Salsa each person needs different things to enable them to learn. If your first teacher dose not do it for you find another. Your learning so get the most out of it by having a teacher and class that suits you.

2. Stay focused on what is being taught. This may sound a little simple but if you only have an hour to learn why waste it on chatting; you can do that after at the bar.

There are 1000s of distractions in class, your partner, other class members, that new cute dance partner that your about to dance with. Remember youre paying to learn Salsa; get your moneys worth.

3. Swap partner during the lesson. Yes thats right dance with different people. You may have come with a friend or significant other and want to dance with them. If the instructor is asking you to rotate your partners join in.

Why do this? it will speed up the learning process and get you used to dancing with different people; you will be doing this in the clubs. The major benefit is learning to lead and read a lead; by changing partners it will teach you to make the connection with your dance partner which will make your Salsa experiences much more pleasurable.

4. Face the same way as the instructor you are trying to follow. This will simply help you pick up the moves they are teaching much quicker. Sounds simple but you will be amazed out how many people dont do this.

5. Count out loud yes in the classes count out loud this is the one thing you should do all the time in class. I stress do this in the class so you dont have to do it in the Salsa club where it would not be accepted.

Both you and your partner should do this in the classes. Dancing in time to the rhythm is the most important part of dancing salsa. The simplest of moves or sequences look amazing when danced in time with the music.

6. Write down the move or sequence. Give your self time at the end of the class to write down what you have learnt. You will quickly develop a short hand for the different turns and moves that make up a sequence.

Dont ever stop doing this at what ever level you are at. I bet your instructor writes down the new sequences they learn. Again a very simple idea but it will speed up your learning no end.

Ok here is something that you need to understand it will take approximately 2 months to start find you feet. Some people are quicker but every one has that moment of enlightenment eventually when they feel the Salsa rhythm in their sole and the feet begin to follow.

We have said this before its about having fun not competing.

Lee has been dancing salsa for over 3 years and enjoys travelling all over the world to learn more about salsa dancing. He is the webmaster for http://youcansalsa.co.uk a Cuban Salsa dance website.

Did you find these tips useful? If you would like to find out more about Salsa dancing please visit http://youcansalsa.co.uk and discover how you can learn to dance salsa and be a hit on the dance floor!

Higher SAT Scores From Ballet Class and Pointe Shoes?

A recent article in New Science Daily presents the following:

"Learning, Arts, and the Brain, a study three years in the making, is the result of research by cognitive neuroscientists from seven leading universities across the United States. In the Dana Consortium study, researchers grappled with a fundamental question: Are smart people drawn to the arts or does arts training make people smarter?"

#8 in a series of points made is:

"Learning to dance by effective observation is closely related to learning by physical practice, both in the level of achievement and also the neural substrates that support the organization of complex actions. Effective observational learning may transfer to other cognitive skills."

MARY BELLE MCCORKLE and SHIRLEY KISER wrote in the Tucson Citizen, "How the arts make kids smarter. Students' scores improve in the three R's when they're exposed to music, dance and the theater".

Betty Oliphant, former Principal of The National Ballet School of Canada insisted on high academic standards, because she grew up in London in the earlier 2oth Century where dancers were considered dumb. Personally I don't think you can learn the classics if you are dumb.

What is dumb anyway? Shyness, less-confident, dyslexic, under-nourished? Maybe not interested in the usual social issues and dramas?

If it were not for the internet I would not know that scientists find this subject interesting. Artists know that they are not less smart than scientists. They also know that the money needed to run all these multi-university studies could run a small ballet company for a season or two.

Scientists and artists alike need patrons - and competition is fierce. Patrons need artists and scientists, and vice versa - so it's a chicken or the egg situation - and it makes an interesting holisitc picture for us all to function in.

But if your parents worry that your grades will drop if you spend too much time in pointe shoes or the ballet class - just mention the higher SAT scores!l

Patriotic Music: Surprising Secrets About Those Flag-Waving Sounds

Whether played by a marching band, an orchestra, or a rock group, there are patriotic tunes that everyone in America finds familiar, exciting and uplifting. But how much do you know about how these songs were created? And what do you know about the people who wrote them?

There are some surprising facts behind all of this glorious music.

So, fire up the barbecue grill, look up at the fireworks, and strike up the band as we reveal the secrets behind the most influential nationalistic musical moments of all time.

"Star Spangled Banner," Francis Scott Key, 1814.

Schoolchildren in America all learn how Key watched the British bombardment of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812 and so admired the courage of the beleaguered American forces that he wrote four stanzas of "The Star Spangled Banner" (only the first is usually performed). Key based the melody on an English drinking song called "To Anacreon in Heaven." The song has only been the national anthem since 1931, and there was a strong movement to replace it with one of the other songs on this list.

"America (My Country 'Tis of Thee)," Samuel F. Smith, 1832.

The music was composed in the 1700s, sometimes attributed to Henry Cary. First popular in Great Britain as "God Save the King (Queen)," the song became bi-continental in 1832. Modern audiences have been greatly moved by the R&B version by Ray Charles, a truly wonderful blending of emotion with what musicians call "the groove."

"Rally 'Round the Flag," George F. Root, 1862.

Written for the Union army and its supporters during the Civil War, the song was hugely popular in the North. This didn't prevent Confederate troops from writing their own lyrics and singing the song throughout the South.

"When Johnny Comes Marching Home," Louis Lambert, c. 1863.

Lambert was a pseudonym for Union Army Bandmaster Patrick S. Gilmore. His lyrics, set to an old Irish folk song, were popular through the whole Reconstruction Era (1865-1896). It appears in an extended instrumental version on the soundtrack of Stanley Kubrick's film "Dr. Strangelove."

"Battle Hymn of the Republic," Julia W. Howe, 1861.

Howe is another lyricist who succeeded by utilizing a pre-existing piece of music, in this case a camp meeting tune of the 19th century (which also became "John Brown's Body"). The profound power of the words combined with the compelling melody cannot be denied, and it was sung at the funerals of Winston Churchill, Robert Kennedy, and Ronald Reagan.

"Overture: 1812," Petr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, 1880.

Patriotic music doesnt always revolve around the July 4th celebration, or even refer to the USA. Tchaikovsky got Russian hearts a-pounding with his "1812 Overture in E Flat Major Op. 49," written to celebrate the 70th anniversary of his country's victory battle during the Napoleonic Wars.

"Semper Fidelis," John Philip Sousa, 1889.

Popular ever since it was first performed, the effective and spirited tune takes its name from the U.S. Marine Corps motto meaning "always faithful" and is dedicated to the Marines.

"America the Beautiful," Katharine Lee Bates, 1895, 1904, 1913.

Originally a poem that Bates twice revised after its first publication in 1885, "America the Beautiful" was sung to several different melodies. The song associated with it today is "Materna," composed by Samuel A. Ward in 1882, but it was also often performed to the tune of "Auld Lang Syne."

"Stars and Stripes Forever," John Philip Sousa, 1896.

Composed on Christmas Day, "The Stars and Stripes Forever" has become the country's official march (US Code, Title 36 Chapter 10). Sousa wrote lyrics to the song, but they are little known today (sample: "Let martial note in triumph float / And liberty extend its mighty hand / A flag appears 'mid thunderous cheers, / The banner of the Western land.)"

"Yankee Doodle Boy," George M. Cohan, 1904.

"You're A Grand Old Flag," George M. Cohan, 1906.

"Over There," George M. Cohan, 1917.

Known as "the man who owned Broadway," Cohan was a superstar before the term was coined. While his film biography is called "Yankee Doodle Dandy," the title of his first big tribute to America is actually "The Yankee Doodle Boy." Cohan excited U.S. audiences again in 1906 with "You're a Grand Old Flag," although the original line was "You're a Grand Old Rag." It was America's entrance into World War I in 1917 that inspired Cohan to write "Over There," for which he received a congressional medal.

"God Bless America," Irving Berlin, 1938.

The prolific Berlin (900+ songs despite being unable to read music) originally wrote this song right after the first World War, but did not complete it until just before World War II. Kate Smith first performed it during her radio show on Armistice Day, 1938. An immediate sensation, the song was often suggested to replace the "Star Spangled Banner" as the national anthem.

"Star Spangled Banner," Jimi Hendrix, 1969.

The legendary guitarist took the stage near dawn on the final day of the Woodstock Music and Art Fair. The 13th song in his hour-long set was an incendiary rendition of the venerable tune. In a performance that was somehow savage and grand at the same time, Hendrix wrestled new levels of emotion from the song and generations have never heard it quite the same way again.

"Apocalypse Now," Francis Ford Coppola, 1979.

The music in question is "Ride of the Valkyries," from Richard Wagner's opera, "Die Walkure" (1854-56). The composition fit perfectly into director Coppola's nightmarish vision of the Vietnam War. The sequence, featuring a helicopter attack at dawn, never fails to raise the emotions of viewers.

Scott G owns G-Man Marketing (http://www.gmanmarketing.com) where he makes radio commercials and creates advertising in all media. He is also recording artist The G-Man, with albums on iTunes and Rhapsody via Delvian Records.

Is Your Daughter Grinding? (and I Don't Mean Her Teeth)

Here is a news-worthy material that will never find its way into the mainstream media. Is your daughter grinding? First, what is "grinding." According to Mariam's Webster dictionary it is "to rotate the hips in an erotic manner." So, to paraphrase the question, I will ask - is your daughter rotating her hips in an erotic manner? To add to that, is she doing that while a guy is standing behind her?

I don't want to be a party pooper, but the chances are that if your daughter has danced at a party, she has grinded, because it is the most popular way to dance nowadays. It is fascinating to think about the ways that dancing has changed in order to speed things up. It makes me wonder every time I see people dance this way. Are we that primitive, that we actually have to simulate a sexual act on the dance floor in order to show affection? The days of the tango and waltz are gone. Sure, some people still enjoy that kind of dancing, but the most common way to dance at a party nowadays is indeed grinding.

No, I don't need statistics or all kinds of data to back my claim up, if you go to any sort of disco, frat house, party, etc. you will find an awful sight. I am not here to tell you how messed up your kids are, or about modern values - I just find it fascinating that if I were a parent, I would really feel embarrassed to find out that my daughter is grinding.

Why embarrassed? Maybe embarrassed at the path that our society is taking, the awful music videos being promoted on TV and the never-ending sexual ads on billboards and the media. As comedian Steve Byrnes said, it is funny slash depressing at the same time. Where are the romance and the anticipation? They are nowhere to be found.

One should really look at this issue at a different, more global perspective. We are evolving. We want things faster and ready-to-go. Our world is getting smaller and smaller, to the point where we can never leave our room and still get the information we need. We also want instant gratification, instant success, instant downloads and instant fun. So, when you asks your daughter if she has grinded, don't be surprised if she instantly says "yes."

The author has a blog entitled http://www.badgeneration.com It is for observational humor and social commentary on today's insanities. The author does not support grinding. Any affiliations with grinding, or acts of grinding nature ought to be erased and forgotten.

Guitar Tones - 3 Ways To Get A Better Guitar Sound

How many times have you been to see a band play at a local club and you've been blown away by not only the guitarist's skillful playing but also the clarity and quality of their guitar sound? Or maybe you've been less than impressed with the sound coming from the guitarist's rig? A good guitar sound is a vital component of a great-sounding live performance, or any great recording. Think about the signature guitar tones of the great players such as Mark Knopfler in Dire Straits, or David Gilmour of Pink Floyd. Would their albums be half as memorable if it wasn't for not only their great guitar playing but also their distinctly individual guitar sounds?

I've been playing guitar as a hobby for 20 years, and professionally for the past 5 years. In this time I've picked up a lot of experience that have helped me to get a guitar tone I'm happy with - it's taken many years, but by bearing the following tips in mind, I'm almost completely happy with my sound(us guitarists are rarely entirely happy!) - and I hope there's some useful info in here for you too.

1. Less Is More

The truth is that we all love to buy the latest gadgets and toys for our guitar rigs. Whether it's a new wah pedal, distortion box or multi-effects unit, it's a lot of fun to explore and experiment with the different sonic textures these add (or subtract!) from your guitar tone. The trouble is, you might find that the more pedals and signal processors you put between your guitar and your amplifier, the weaker your guitar signal gets...

One thing many of us guitar players forget is that the most important factor in determining your sound is your fingers. What you PLAY is what counts. Try using a cleaner signal path with as few digital boxes as possible, and let your amp do the talking.

2. Less Gain, Less Pain

Using excessive amounts of gain on your amplifier can have disastrous results that not only annoy your fellow band members, but also (and most importantly), your audience. Lots of gain can mean your guitar produces a horrific feedback squeal during the the gaps in your playing, which can cause hearing damage, as well as audience members leaving the gig early.

Excessive gain means your signal becomes distorted, which is great for musical styles such as rock and metal. But take the example of Angus and Malcolm Young of AC/DC... Those guys use minimal amounts of gain and let the sheer volume of their amps do the distorting. This means their sound cuts through in the mix very clear, as their sound is more solid and less broken up by distortion. Of course, you have have to work a little harder to sustain your notes (by using vibrato), but the difference in clarity to your sound is the reward.

3. Learn to really use your multieffects unit

If you're using a multi effects unit, for example a Line 6 or a Boss GT-8 or similar, you'll know just how amazing these boxes can sound. There are so many great amp simulations available, the possibilities are virtually endless. However there are so many variables, you could go mad with option anxiety before you finally find your dream guitar tone!

I think the trick here is to ignore the factory presets and design your own tones from scratch. It helps to listen to your favourite albums and try to emulate the same guitar tones you hear. The factory preset tones are usually designed to wow you in the store to make you buy it, however they're not really suitable for live use or recording. Take the time to read the manual and really understand and get to grips with the operation of the unit, and you'll be more confident in shaping your own unique guitar sound.

If you want a tip on how to really get the very best from your multi effects unit, take a look at http://www.onelouderguitars.com

What Makes a Great Musician?

You can have two individuals, with similar musical technical ability, play the same exact notes on a guitar and receive completely different reaction from the audience. You can also have musicians who train day in and day out and become extremely good at technically manipulating their instrument but when you hear them play, they hardly evoke any emotional reaction in the audience. On the other hand, you have the other kind of musicians, who may either be technically good or not, but their delivery always triggers a palpable emotional reaction in their audience. So what is the element that makes the difference?

Maybe we can begin to answer that by following it with these questions. Does the great musician really need an instrument to become one? Or, to phrase it another way, does the instrument have anything to do in creating a great musician? The answer is, as you might have guessed, not really. The instrument is purely incidental, in fact, a great musician can merely whistle and get a favorable audience reaction. Why? because they are born with the internal knowledge of the universal language of music, also know as, the gift of music. The possession of that knowledge or talent is the critical difference between the great musician versus the instrumental player. The great musician usually has a clear connection with the musical language within themselves, making it easy for them to express it. To the extent they can tap into that energy the greater they can reach the audience. The not so great musician, on the other hand, has a blurred connection, if at all. You can play your instrument till you drop dead, if the notes are not connected to your internal language of music you are merely playing notes, not music.

The unfortunate difference between the language of music and any other language is that, you cannot learn it. If you are born with it, you can learn how to better tap into it, if you are not born with it however, you might as well take up Spanish. For those born with it, practicing your music should involve great attention to the connection of yourself to the language of music as much as the time spent with your instrument developing your technique. By that I mean, in order to tap into the energy of music easily, you will have to spend a great deal of time taking care of your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health as opposed to just concentrating on your instrument. Ultimately, it is your usefulness, in terms of inspiring and touching your audience that makes you a great musician.

Mexico City Sees Its First Gay Civil Unions

When two middle-aged men tied the knot on March 16, they became the first legally recognised gay couple in Mexico City, the capital of the worlds second largest Catholic country.
When Mexican gays unite

Journalist Antonio Medina, 38, and economist Jorge Cerpa, 31, registered for homosexual partnership soon after the citys new law permitting gay civil unions took effect, according to the Associated Press.

The Mexicans were united in front of government buildings, kissing under a flag that read "Civil Union Law: Your right to choose" while a band played "Besame Mucho".

"With this law, a history of exclusion comes to an end," Medina told the AP. "Today, the love that before did not dare say its name has now entered the public spotlight.

Last November, Mexico City passed a bill to allow gays and lesbians to form a partnership protecting property, pension and inheritance rights. But it stops short of granting all the legal statues and rights of marriage.

Campaigners had promoted same-sex civil unions for 7 years before the municipal assembly recognized gay couples legal statues, the BBC reported.

"It is simply fantastic," said Julio Roman, a gay rights campaigner in Mexico City. "It is more than symbolic. It is the result of years of fighting for our basic rights."

Long road ahead

But not everyone is happy. Church officials and Christians reportedly took it to the streets to voice their objections.

"It is simply not the will of God to have acts of homosexuality," Armando Martinez Gomez, president of the Association of Catholic Lawyers, told BBC News.

"We are not against gay people," he noted. "But we believe in a union between a man and a woman for the creation of children."

Church officials have also called the new policy "Hitleria" and the citys politicians faithless, Reuters said.

Mexico City is not the first to take more liberal attitudes toward homosexuals in Latin America. Argentina's capital Buenos Aires, Mexicos northern state of Coahuila and Brazils southern state of Rio Grande do Sul all have legalised same-sex unions.

But the public still remains intolerant of gay couples agitating for legal rights in Mexico, where some 90 percent of its 107 million people are Catholics.

Only 28 per cent of adults support laws that would grant homosexual partners to legal statues and some benefits and rights, according to a poll by Parametra.

In 2005, every two days in Latin America a gay was killed because of his sexuality, reported the Belgium-based NGO International Lesbian and Gay Association.

Countries like Brazil and Mexico have the highest levels of hate crimes, because homosexual people become easy targets when coming out of the closet, said the Economist.

Merengue in New Zealand

Origin:

Merengue originated in the Dominican Republic. It is the national dance of the Dominican. There are a few stories describing how the dance originated. The most common one is that of the slaves who were chained together and had to move by dragging one foot at a time. Merengue as a two beat music and since the footwork is quite similar to walking, it is a very easy dance to learn.

Music:

Merengue is played in 2/4. The double sided drum is played on one side with a stick with a strong syncopation to mark the beats. Saxophones and guitars are also very popular instruments found in the music.

Dance:

Merengue footwork is extremely easy to learn as it's a simple two beat movement ("left, right") with the body weight being moved between the legs. The upper body stays fairly straight while the hips move with the weight change. The Merengue frame is much smaller (closer) in comparison to Salsa. Having said that, Merengue is often led with a single (right) hand on the back. But in open hold, arms are often completely extended out instead of maintaining a closer L-shaped frame.

Latinos NZ Popularity Scale: 8.5/10

Meregue is a very popular Latin American Dance in New Zealand, second only to Salsa. On an average night out in a Latin Club, as many as every second or third song can be Merengue.

Laila Ali - From Ring to Dance Floor

Laila Ali's inspiring career as a boxer, following in her famous father's footsteps, has only been enhanced by her life and accomplishments outside of the ring.

Laila Ali was born December 30, 1977 to former Heavyweight Champion of the World Muhammed Ali and his third wife, Veronica Porsche Anderson. She is currently the women's boxing Triple Crown Super Middleweight Champion as well as a contestant on ABC's popular Dancing with the Stars.

Ali earned a degree in Business Management at Santa Monica College and then went on to own and operate a successful nail salon in California. She had planned to attend the University of Southern California Business School, but after watching women's boxing on television for the first time, she decided to become a boxer. Approximately a year later, Ali sold her business and started training to become a professional fighter.

Ali made her professional boxing debut on October 8, 1999, at the age of 21. She insisted that the press not record videos of this fight. Her opponent, April Fowler, was a 0-1 fighter who worked as a waitress. 31 seconds into the 1st round, she knocked out her opponent, April Fowler. After Ali's pro debut, she told reporters that she had made her father proud, and that she would knock out every one of her opponents and that it was a promise.

Born: December 30, 1977
Died: --
Famous For: Undefeated World Boxing Champion; Daughter of former Heavyweight Champion of the World Muhammed Ali; named one of People Magazine's Most 100 Beautiful People of 2007.
Key Accomplishments: Earned a degree in Business Management from Santa Monica College; Undefeated World Boxing Champion, Author; Model.
Significant Quote: "There's so many other things that I'm talented at, so many things that I could be doing, that I wouldn't be boxing if it wasn't what I loved to do."
Fun Quote: "I didn't even know that women boxed. And then when I saw it for the first time I wanted to do it."

Ali went on to win her next 8 fights by knockout, and in October of 2000, she beat the then-reigning champion Kendra Lendhart. She won 3 more belts in 2002. On August 17, 2002, she became the new IBA super middleweight champion after defeating Suzy Taylor in the second round. Then, on November 8, 2002, she won the WIBA and the IWBF supper middleweight titles after her opponent, Valerie Mahfood, forced the referee to stop the action at 1:14 of round eight. Next, she had to beat Christy Martin, who was considered the best female fighter in the sport. On August 23rd, 2003, Ali knocked Martin down for the first time in 50 professional bouts, and stopped her in the fourth round.

In her last fight, on February 3rd, 2006, Ali knocked out her opponent, Gwendolyn O'Neal, in just 56 seconds. The bout, which was held in Johannesburg, South Africa, was attended by Nelson Mandela. Ali had the opportunity to meet him prior to the fight.

On February 20, 2007, ABC announced that Ali would participate in the fourth season of Dancing with the Stars. Her partner is Maksim Chmerkivskiy, and together they received the first 10 from judge Len Goodman for their rumba.

Ali also wrote a motivational book, which is called Reach!. She wrote the book to help inspire other young women. In it, she uses her own experiences and challenges as examples for her readers. She also loves to cook, enjoys Pilates, and has done some modeling, including appearances in Sports Illustrated, People, Ebony, Glamour, Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, Essence, ESPN the Magazine, and Time. Ali is currently engaged to former pro football player Curtis Conway. They plan to wed in July, 2007.

Can You Become a Boogie-Man or Boogie-Lady?

Boogie music, also known as boogie woogie, is a genre of piano-heavy music particular to America in the 1930's and 1940's and 1950's. It's characteristic walking bass is familiar to many as a harkening back to rock and roll, even though the form is based strongly on the blues (in fact, it's often been called an upbeat version of the blues).

Boogie originally started as a strictly piano form; the most familiar versions are still based solely around the instrument. The precise origin of boogie-woogie piano however is uncertain; it was no doubt influenced by early rough music played in the roadhouses and honky tonks in New Orleans and Kansas City and other cities and towns in the south.

A couple early boogie-men were W.C. Handy and Jelly Roll Morton, and as it grew in popularity many other pianists adopted the style. But as boogie became more and more popular, so too did the idea of including a whole band. Before long, the once solo genre adapted itself to accommodate an entire band. The latest versions of boogie often include guitar and other instruments, but the piano and drums remain the focal point. Even years later you can hear the influence of boogie in the music of Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis, Johnny Cash, and many others.

Many boogies (but not all) are based on the familiar 12-bar blues, which is a series of chord progressions using just the I, IV, and V chords:

Typical 12-bar blues:

4 bars of the I chord

2 bars of the IV chord

2 bars of the I chord

2 bars of the V chord

2 bars of the I chord

then rinse and repeat

Here is a typical left hand boogie pattern in the key of C that can be played either as single notes or octaves or offset broken octaves:

C - E - G - A - Bb - A - G - E

C - E - G - A - Bb - A - G - E

F - A - C - D - Eb - D - C - A

C - E - G - A - Bb - A - G - D

G - B - D - E - F - E - D - B

C - E - G - A - Bb - A - G - E

Boogie is often credited as the originator of rock and roll, but that idea isn't necessarily valid. While boogie definitely played some role in rock and roll's early days, it was really rhythm and blues that started the form. Boogie, on the other hand, remained an off-shoot of blues and an entity in its own right. It also may have indirectly spawned a dance of the same name, a dance that led largely to boogie being credited as rock and roll's most dominant predecessor.

The boogie dance, an upbeat and energetic social dance with small roots in swing, was danced mostly to rock and roll. It spread through teenage social circles like wildfire and became almost synonymous with rock and roll. As boogie (the dance) continued to grow through the 50s, boogie (the music) began to disappear from the limelight. And as it grew further and further from the mainstream, boogie's captivating hold on audiences became understood as a product of the dance, not the music. The way in which the two forms of boogie were interchanged often led to confusion about where and when the form originated and how it related to the dance and the inception of rock and roll.

In any case, boogie is here to stay. It's fun to play and fun to listen to.

10 Sensual Treats For Delicious Marriage Intimacy

Before you can spice up a marriage and inflame your passion, the basic ingredients of your relationship recipe need some attention. Spicy nights of steamy sex need to be tempered with sensual pleasuring sessions. By learning to enjoy the subtle sensations of loving intimacy together, you will both be able to more fully appreciate the full variety of erotic treats available to you. Sweet and delicious, hearty and satisfying, spicy hot or exotic and decadent, develop an appetite for everything on the sex menu as you sample and savor all the possible flavors of your intimate experiences together.

Make pleasure a priority in your relationship. Take time to enjoy each other with these succulent suggestions:

  1. Shower together.
Give your lover a sensual scalp massage while you shampoo and condition their hair. Lather your bodies up with soap and slither and slide against each other. Caressing each other while slick with soap can also feel amazing. Sex in the shower may be a bit awkward but can be very enjoyable. Try using a detachable massaging shower head for extra stimulation.
  2. Have a bubble bath together.
Arrange some candles, incense, soft music and maybe some chilled wine ahead of time. Set aside alone time for relaxing together in calm and soothing tranquility. Save the sex for later when you are dry and ready to cuddle in a comfy bed.
  3. Take hand in hand nature walks together.
Find time to get away from the bustle and stress of every day life. Moon or star light walks at night, strolling along a beach or water front, secluded picnics by a stream, or just wandering through a nature trail are times together that will strengthen your bonds of love and affection.
  4. Enjoy food intimately.
Prepare a tray with a number of different food items chosen for their texture, taste and smell. Include various fruit, syrups, whip cream, liquors and, of course, some refreshing drinks. One at a time, blind fold and feed each other samples with a focus on the taste sensation. See if they can guess what it is. Sensually apply some of the food to regions of your lover's body then lick or nibble it off.
  5. Appreciate an appetizing aroma.
An intoxicating smell can be very sexy and stimulate desire. Choose a favorite perfume or cologne that you each wear only for intimate nights together. Create a scent memory associated with romantic feelings that can get you in the mood in an instant. Play a hide and seek perfume game searching each other for a secretly applied scent. You can also delicately stroke your lover's face with a fresh rose bud or flower. Or just revel in your lover's natural scent laced with sex pheromones.
  6. Enjoy a candlelight dinner together.
Although dining out is wonderful now and then, preparing and cooking your own dinner together can be even more rewarding. Organize the meal items so that you can quickly get dressed in evening wear before dinner to make it even more special. Enjoy your food with soft music and candles to create a romantic atmosphere. And, if cooking at home, make it simple so there is little or no mess to clean up before enjoying each other.
  7. Slow dance naked together.
In a dark room with the soft glow of candle or moon light, slow dance naked to romantic music. Gently stroke and caress each other as you embrace and sway to the music. Kiss each other tenderly with loving affection and gaze into each others eyes. These quiet moments of intimacy can be very emotionally fulfilling.
  8. Give each other an oil massage.
The sensual feeling of fingers and palms gliding smoothly over oiled skin is highly erotic for both the giver and receiver of the massage. Although there are books on relaxing and erotic massage techniques, once you try it you will quickly discover what feels good. In addition to the obvious (back, shoulders and legs), give some attention to fingers, toes, chest and stomach before venturing to the eager erogenous zones.
  9. Indulge in the luxury of satin or silk on skin.
Wear silky smooth lingerie for women and boxers/shirts for guys. Caress your lover through the fabric and enjoy the sensual feel as body parts slide and glide across each other. Get naked in bed with satin or high thread count sheets and make love together in style.
  10. Experience super slow motion sex.
Rather than attempting to trigger an orgasm, focus on the sensations you feel during intercourse. Every twitch, throb and pulse. The warmth and wetness of your special union. Become aware of how even breathing creates subtle sensations in your loins.

Awaken your desires for sensual pleasure together and you will stimulate a renewed hunger for each other.
