Piano Teaching Games
PIANO GAMES
There are lots of fun games for the whole family that you can play using piano by number books. Here are just a few:
Name That Tune: One person plays the songs on the piano while everyone tries to guess the title of the song. Kids love playing the songs, so kids can take turns. You can also use the Play Along Audio CD, but kids also love being the center of attention and playing the songs on the piano.
Musical Chairs: Put chairs in center of room and when the music stops everyone has to find a chair, except there's always one chair too few. Use the CDs or have the kids (any age) play the piano.
Christmas Pageant: There's more than enough material on the Play Along Audio CD to present your own show. Kids (any age) will love putting it together, and can take turns playing along with the music or acting in the show.
Make Up Your Own Show: The Family Favorites section has 28 familiar melodies that creative kids can turn into a show about anything.
Have Everyone Try It! You'd be surprised what fun a family gathering can become when everyone is asked to play a song from the book. You'll discover that your family and friends have hidden musical talents! Most people really do want to try playing the piano, so make a game of it!
TEACHING GAMES
FOURS
(This game is available in GAMES FOR THE PIANO and you can click here to play FOURS on our online piano!)
"Fours" is the most basic rhythm game that I play with kids. I always use it on the first lesson, and on all subsequent lessons until the child seems too old for it. It's a fun but very childish game that teaches rhythm and piano geography without using printed notes or numbers of any kind. It's important for kids to actually play the piano without the encumbrance of graphic notation (notes or numbers) of any kind. For example, you'll notice that kids in general can go to the piano and play three songs:Chopsticks, Heart and Soul, Knuckles (that funny piece played on the black keys with the knuckles of the right hand!)
"Fours" is a piano game constructed in exactly the same mold. The child plays numbers and I play the chords. If the symbols below don't line up in your browser, remember that there are always four notes (numbers) for every chord (letter.) The child begins on "Middle C," also known as the number one: "1" The teacher plays the letters, or chords.
1111 2222 3333 4444 5555 6666 7777 8888
C G C F C F G C
I play a kind of funny Chico Marx oom-pah accompaniment using the chord pattern (C G C F C F G C, etc.) Kids find this very easy and refreshing. We play up the piano keys, moving to the right, with the natural goal being for the child to reach the highest key on the piano. I'm pretty "strict," that is, if the child breaks the rhythm or misses a key, we start over. Strangely enough, kids love to go back to the beginning and start over as much as they love going all the way to highest key.Fun variant: Ask them to count up the white keys until they reach the highest white key (starting from Middle C, which to them is #1) and tell you what the "number" of that white key is (it's 29.) This has no musical value except that it makes the child an explorer of the instrument. The object of these games is to make the child a keen and enthusiastic observer of their instrument, something impossible to do when the child is locked into reading only sheet music from a book. Kids need to improvise, however humbly, and essentially all of my games are designed to make fun music outside of sheet music, numbers or conventional.
"Fours" teaches a child that
1. sheet music is not always necessary to have fun with music
2. they have to count while they play
3. music is divided into numbered units
4. piano is a fun thing they can do right away

Minerals, Numbers, & Foreign Words
All cryptic puzzlers understand that compilers employ words cryptically to obtain their answer, and that they need to recognize those words for what they stand for - LOVE to yield the letter O; SPECIALIST to yield the common suffix ENT; COMPANY to yield CO etc . Many puzzlers built up a list of such words, as have I, with a glossary of over 800 such words.
Beyond such words, compilers often test your knowledge of Minerals, Numbers and Foreign Words so we'll now look at how you cope with such ruses.
MINERALS & ELEMENTS
You'll need to know the symbols for some common elements from the Table of Elements.
The symbol for LEAD is PB but isn't often used because the letters aren't often found in words, whereas the symbols for GOLD ie AU and for SILVER ie AG are commonly employed.
H for HYDROGEN, C for CARBON and O for OXYGEN also find favour. A few others that come in handy are FE for IRON; SN for TIN; AL for ALUMINIUM; CL for CHLORINE; NA for SODIUM and CU for COPPER. It's a good idea to have access to the Table of Elements which should show in most encyclopaedias.
Here are a couple of examples of how these symbols are used in clues:
"Silver has no saint in charge when it comes to disbelieving (8)"
ANSWER = AG NO ST IC
"Copper seldom found on some arrows (6)"
ANSWER = CU RARE (a poison used in blowpipe arrows)
NUMBERS
You need to know your Roman numerals especially
I for 1; IV for 4; V for 5; VI for 6; IX for 9; X for 10, though sometimes you need the letters io; XI for 11; XL for 40;
IL for 49; L for 50; LI for 51; IC for 99; C for 100; CI for 101;
ID for 499; D for 500; DI for 501; IM for 999, M for 1,000;
MI for 1001 etc
NOTE re THOUSAND: K as for KILO or G as for GRAND are sometimes used instead of M. You just have to see what fits.
And don't always expect these Roman numerals to be used in the accepted manner. Compilers use numeric licence as readily as they do literary licence eg
CLUE: 101599 sort of pride (5) ANSWER: CI V IC
Not fair is it!
Here are a couple of more straightforward uses of numbers in clues.
"Five get into a dance and celebrate (5)"
(Instead of 'five' the word 'quintet' could be used)
ANSWER: RE V EL (Here the dance is a 'reel')
"Queen takes in 51 people and then another 11 to make a potion (6)"
ANSWER: E LI XI R (Queen = ER)
NOTE: Sometimes no mention is made of a particular number but you may well be expected to know that a 'cricket team' = XI; a 'rugby' team = XV or that a 'crew' means 'EIGHT' (seldom VIII which is difficult to use in word building.
OFFBEAT NOTE: Sometimes the word 'number' needs to be interpreted as 'something that numbs' ie 'ether' or, less frequently, 'chloroform' and 'anaesthetist'
FOREIGN WORDS
You need to be a person of many parts to do cryptic puzzles, and one of those parts is to be a mini linguist. French words are the most commonly used eg;
To get the letters UN the clue may contain the words A FRENCH ie the French for the indefinite article A
Similarly the words THE FRENCH are seeking the letters LE or LA
The clue words FRENCH ARTICLE make you choose from LE; LES; LA; UN; UNE.
AND FRENCH is often used to get ET, which incidentally can also come from the word ALIEN
ON FRENCH is looking for SUR
Remember 'Sur la table' for 'on the table
EXAMPLE: " Enduring the French swindle (7)
ANSWER: LA STING
Then there are common French words such as TRES for VERY which may be used thus
"Pierre's very hand will result in an unlawful entry (8)
ANSWER: TRES PASS
Here you're expected to know that, to the Frenchman Pierre, VERY is TRES, and that one interpretation of HAND is PASS as in 'Hand me the salt please'
Nobody says that cryptic puzzles are going to be easy right??
Another device to indicate that you need to find a French word is the use of IN PARIS; IN MARSEILLES and so on
EXAMPLE: It's good in Paris as 500 grow older to get restraints (7)
ANSWER; BON D AGE
OTHER LANGUAGES
German words are probably the next most common foreign words to be used eg DER or DAS for THE; JA for YES; EIN for ONE, AN or A; DING for THING; etc
EXAMPLE: Indulge as the German comes after pot (6)
ANSWER: PAN DER
Just as we met PIERRE in the French words above, we meet FRITZ in German words. And words like IN BERLIN indicate that you need a German word
Two other common usages are:
THE ITALIAN to get IL
(For PIERRE as above read MANUEL and watch for words like IN MILAN)
and THE SPANISH to get EL.
(For PIERRE as above read MANUEL and watch for words like IN MADRID)
LATIN gets into the act too eg WITH LATIN is seeking the Latin word for WITH ie CUM
Getting into these foreign words may seem to be adding an extra layer of difficulty to cryptic puzzling but you'll find the more straightforward ones like THE, A, AND etc are enough to get you by.
It would be a good idea to have a French/English dictionary on hand. I personally have a series of the small yellow LANGENSCHEIDT dictionaries to cover most languages.
Well that's your lot for now. Here's hoping that some of the above broadens your cryptic horizons and eases your frustrations with our eternal adversaries, the compilers. Lots of luck.
Dick Honor is a retired publisher and self-confessed cryptic crossword tragic. He is the author of "Your Start-Up Guide To Cryptic Crosswords", a guide for those who believe that cryptic crosswords are beyond them. Dick provides beginners with simple language guidance, 450 practice clues with answers and a glossary of over 700 cryptic clue words.

Apple iPod Downloads And The Legal Maze
Is copying Apple iPod downloads to your iPod illegal?
The simple answer is no.
The only thing that is illegal is taking copyrighted material that you haven't acquired legitimately - and, of course, distributing copyrighted material that you have acquired legitimately.
You are well within your rights to copy your own music collection onto your computer or your iPod, as long as you don't then copy those files onto your friends computer or iPod.
As for music on the internet there are numerous legal options, including online services that sell individual tracks to download and keep, others offer unlimited access to a music archive in return for either a monthly fee or a one off membership fee,
There are also plenty of Apple iPod downloads that are both legal and free, these include one-off promotions from the major labels, as well as songs from little known musicians or upcoming bands who are more interested in exposure and making a name for themselves than making a profit.
As we've already seen there is nothing the record industry fears more (for obvious reasons) than the uncontrolled distribution of its copyrighted material.
It is difficult (impossible?) to see how the record companies can stop people sharing files they have copied from their own CD's even if the manage to legally kill off the underground file sharing networks.
The major labels do however have a strategy for stopping people freely distributing tracks they have legally purchased.
Its called Digital Rights Management or DRM, it involves embedding special pieces of code into music files (or Apple iPod downloads or other formats for that matter) which digitally impose certain restrictions on what you can do with that file.
Peter Ward writes on a variety of download and digital recording issues. For more information on Apple iPod Downloads visit.... http://www.best-music-download-site.co.uk

Mosquitoes In Sydney (A Sketch)
Mosquitoes bite, such the blood out of you, but really do not harm you, until you get malaria, then watch out!
Supremely casual she lit a cigarette, put it in her mouth, talking around it, the music inside the bar is real loud, you can hardly hear yourself talking.
"What is it you're thinking?" she asked me.
"Nothing," I said.
"Ok," she says with a smirk, looks through the doorway into the nightclub from the hallway.
The girl next me, sees her girlfriend now, whom was at another club with her, she has arrived, and to her she says "You came back all this way back from 'Barney's?"
"Not enough guys there," she tells the girl I'm talking to, a lovely dark eyed tanned girl with blond hair.
"You were not there very long," she replies. (Her face averted from mine, she's looking at the tall blond haired guy doing his thing with two girls on the dance floor. (Her girlfriend peremptory yet quiet.)
She now has a cigarette between her lips, the cigarette and her head bobbing with the music that is seeping out into the hallway. I tell myself, chasing her, is like her chasing that blond haired guy, whom is slain to the lusts of his accomplishments in the bullring there. She is insanely immersed in grief over this guy, he is her quest for the evening, her challenge, so I tell myself, and so it look to me.
I sense she likes my company, and I am comfortable to be with, so I've been told, but when the it comes down to the end of the night, she'll be with him, if she has to hogtie him, or strip for him in front of everyone. And I thin she'll do it. I saw that once happen in Germany. When a gal gets a fixation on a man, it doesn't matter if he is surrounded by a hundred naked men, she will pick that one out every time, until the challenge is over, then, put him out to roost in some empty field in the cold.
"Thanks," she told me for lighting her cigarette, "Where you from," she asked, and I replied, "I'm on leave from Vietnam, the war...."
"Oh, yes," she comments, "we have some of our boys over there also."
"So you've evidently been following this guy all night, is that correct?"
"Yes, from one bar to the next, and I'll end up with him one way or the other." (She now puffs rapidly at the cigarette, staring into the crowed dance floor.)
In life I would find out, women like her had the determination, but not much sense, and in the long run, well, to be honest, they were not looking for anything for the long run, it was now or never. It didn't matter what I knew, or what might have happened between us, because she didn't want it, all she needed was an affidavit for him to be hers for the evening. So I was wasting my time. But everyone likes to keep a second, in place, they look good to others to have men standing around you with their tongues out, and I simply said, "It's too late," and started to walk away, my back to her, actually, it was an insult to her, and she knew it, for I did not look back. She was enjoying what I called Dead Reality, the best of all reason to make love, no commitment.
"That's right!" I told myself, listen to the voice inside of you; it will tell you when to avoid the execution forth coming.
I did meet another girl that night, I got drunker than a skunk, and when she woke me up in the morning, she wanted me to take her to the park, and we did, and I then left her alone. She came to my hotel room a few days later, asked me why I did not call her. And I was honest, I said I had only a week in Sydney, and I wanted to do all I could, and I was then heading back to Vietnam, and who knows. And she understood.

dance music chartsDJ Danny Rampling to Play at Exclusive Summer Boat Party on 19th July 2008 in London UK
Danny Rampling is a former British House Music DJ and is widely credited as one of the original founders of the UK's rave/club scene. His long career began in the early 1980s playing hip-hop, soul and funk around numerous bars and clubs in London. During a now legendary holiday in Ibiza in 1987, Rampling, along with fellow DJs Paul Oakenfold and Nicky Holloway, attended Amnesia, a then open air nightclub in San Rafael. At the club the group were introduced to the unique eclectic style of DJ Alfredo, playing, among other genres, the new house music that had been exported from the USA.
Upon his return to England, Rampling, along with his then wife, Jenny, attempted to recreate the Ibizan experience by promoting what is regarded as the UK's first Balearic rave club, Shoom. Shoom ran for 3 years, starting out at a gym in Southwark, London. It launched acid house culture virtually overnight, while simultaneously providing a basis for mass ecstasy use in the UK.
In the following years Rampling continued his career in music as a DJ and producer, remixing many UK and international acts while forming a band, The Millionaire Hippies. In November 1994 he joined the BBC, presenting the "Lovegroove Dance Party" on Radio 1 until March 2002, making it the second longest running dance music show in radio after Pete Tong's "Essential Selection".
The mid 1990's also saw Rampling's DJing style diversify. While still playing House and Garage sets, Rampling also began to headline at harder, trancier parties, e.g. 'South', at The Zap Club, in Brighton. Rampling himself referred to his newer style as 'Euro', and at this time showcased new Euro tracks, during the final thirty minute weekly mix of his Radio 1 Show. Additionally, Rampling's Double CD Love Groove Dance Mix featured House and Garage on the first CD, and 'Euro' on the second.
In 2005 Danny Rampling announced his retirement from DJing to concentrate on running his restaurant, however by 2007 this hiatus from the world of DJ'ing had been lifted by some on-off appearances at selected clubs.
Danny Rampling has decided to make his comeback by accepting many offers to DJ around the globe, He will be playing a special Twenty Years of House Summer Boat Party in London on Saturday 19th July 2008. He will be joined by up-coming house DJs Jerry Frempong & Ian Morbey from Pret A Ecouter Music.
Danny has launched a new music site that encapsulates the history of house music, the site is called TWENTY YEARS OF HOUSE MUSIC http://www.twentyyearsofhouse.com - there is even a free DJ mix from the legend himself that he is giving away.

dance music 2007Beijing Opera Masks and Face-Painting
One of the more striking aspects of the Beijing Opera is the Masks and Facial Make-up used to portray the various characters in a production. The use of symbolic colors, stylized lines, and fantastical facial exaggeration all serve the performance magic and grandeur. There is really nothing that compares to a skillful and artistic rendition of one of China's favorite stories from historical events and classical literature.
The current Beijing Opera originated from a combination of several sources. In 1790, the four great theatre groups from Anhui came to perform for the Royal Family. They used the traditional melodies and aria called Xi Pi. Around 1828, performers from Hubei joined them to form a combined troupe adding their own music called Er Huang. Thousands of pieces were performed regaling great tales of historic events and popular literature as well as their own versions of Western stories.
There have been scholarly discussions concerning the origins of Chinese theatrical mask wearing and face painting. A widely held theory is that face painting developed from the dances called " Lanlingwang (Prince Lanling)" from the Tang Dynasty (A.D. 618-907).
Another possible origin of this practice is rooted in the ancient use of Masks and Make-up in religious ceremonies, particularly exorcisms. There are examples of artwork that show shamans and other actors with stylized painted faces. Upon closer examination, these look very much like the early used of face painting and mask wearing in the Chinese opera theatre.
There is an old saying from the Song (960-1279) and Yuan (1271-1368) dynasties that was, "Shentou guimian", or "masks for Gods, make-up for ghosts." It meant that to play a god you must wear a mask, but to play a ghost all you needed was to slap some paint on your face. This followed the idea that gods were sacred and it would be sacrilegious, perhaps even dangerous, to portray them, whereas ghosts, the embodiment of disease, poverty and evil were not subject to such respect. Craftsmen who carved Deity masks believed that as soon as the eyes were carved out of a piece of art, it then became animated with the spirit of the gods.
Over time, actors began to think that it was less a sin to portray gods and spirits on the stage instead of in temples and palaces. They started to favor make-up over the stoic solid masks in performance. This allowed for more expression over the "dead face" of a mask to the "live face" of paints and dyes.
For the longest time, performers took great liberty in their choice of paint methods and colors. Later, during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) did there become some conventions and standards. An agency called Shengpingshu (Shengping Agency) was in charge of the affairs of opera performance. They established painting of more than 200 of the current operas with detailed instructions on the character make-up patterns. This became the official standard for face painting.
There are four basic categories of characters in the standard Beijing Opera.
SHENG - Male roles
DAN - Female Roles
CHOU - Comedy roles
JING - Painted face males
Jing, usually males, are the roles with facial painting representing warriors, heroes, statesmen, adventurers, and demons. Jing are found in three basic categories: Zhengjing, Fujing, and Wujing.
The JING roles are more known for courage and resourcefulness than for intelligence. Sometimes a High-ranking General or Warrior/General they usually have a swagger and great self-assurance. There are many common color schemes associated with Jing roles but some have more convention and are easily recognizable.
The compositions of face painting are classified into several patterns based on the belief that a person's face can reveal much about their personality. The overall designs of the face painting are given names like, "three-tiles face", "six-tenths face", "cross face", "slant face", "butterfly face" as well as many, many others.
The colors used on a Jing actors face have symbolic meaning.
RED - Good character, heroic
WHITE - Sneaky and treacherous
GREEN - Rash, lacking self-control
BLACK - Brusque character
BLUE - Wild nature, a robber or thief
GOLD/SILVER - Used only for Gods and Spirits
There are two main types of facial decorations in Chinese Opera: Masks and Facial Painting. Sometimes there are many changes of masks and make-up (even some without the audience's knowledge), this is called Changing Faces. It is a difficult technique that is only mastered after many years of serious and extensive training. This is sometimes used to display the feelings of a character or change the energy of the particular scene. Facial changes for sudden emotional changes are usually done in four ways:
BLOWING DUST - The actor blows black dust concealed in his palm so that it blows back into his face.
MANIPULATING BEARD - Beard colors can be changed while the beard is being moved from black to gray to white showing anger or excitement.
PULLING DOWN MASKS - The actor can pull down a mask that has been sitting on top of his head to communicate a special emotional change.
MOP - The actor mops out the greasepaint hidden in his sideburns or eyebrows to change his facial appearance.
The colorful and flamboyant Jing characters of Beijing Opera theatre with the Beijing Opera Mask as well as facial make-up are enduring part of this very exquisite and beautiful art form. Audiences around the world marvel at the technical virtuosity as well as the austerity of the productions in this symbolic Chinese cultural event.
